From 2022 to 2023, we visited two local animal shelters and conducted on-site interviews. Through these interviews, we learned that the adoption rate of stray animals at these shelters was close to 0. Our preliminary research revealed a troubling rise in pet abandonment, with the abandonment rate reaching a staggering 24% in 2022. Surveys showed that 64% of respondents got pets for companionship, but as the novelty wore off and unexpected financial burdens arose, the rate of abandonment sharply increased. To further explore the root causes, we collected extensive data through questionnaires, analyzing how different families treat and interact with their pets. To raise public awareness about abandoned animals, we created postcards and a promotional video. We also organized a donation drive for pet treats and accessories, collecting over 100 pet items, toys, and more than 50 kilograms of cat and dog food.
